Who I am

Volksmarch in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

I’ve had ups and I’ve had downs, and I’m starting to figure out how to maximize the ups!

Have you ever heard of an introverted adventurer? Now you have.

I ruined my eyes at an early age, reading books about people from other ages and places doing things I’d never dream of doing. I was in elementary school  shortly after Hawaii joined the United States and I remember all the excited, exotic fanfare.  How could I know that it would become my home and virtual home base 20 years later? When I married a great guy in the military after earning my Masters degree, little did I realize the adventures that were in store for me.

Now, 38 years and four children later, I’ve developed a chronic case of wanderlust.

We’ve lived in Japan, Panama, Germany and the United States and visited dozens more countries.  I’ve taken risks, most turn out well, a few turn out badly. That’s why they’re called risks – they carry an element of failure.  And I continue to learn from my mistakes . . . mostly.

I’m blessed to have friends and family all over the world – for a nearsighted Puerto Rican kid who grew up in the projects in New York City (the greatest city in the world, I might add), this always amazes me. With my DH (Dear Husband), DF (Dear Friend) and DN (Dear Neighbor), I try to stay in touch, try new things, and stay anchored to the old.

My newest adventure is walking the Camino Frances to Santiago de Campostella in Spain. This is an 800 kilometer long medieval pilgrimage along northern Spain which people have walked  for a thousand years. Just me and 10,000 of my closest friends will be found along The Way.

Why? Why, indeed.

I am sharing my preparations for my trip on the Camino, and other adventures, as they occur.  I hope to make the time you share with me enjoyable and worthwhile for you – I sincerely appreciate your joining me.

Please share any comments, I’d love to hear from you.

  1. Hello, Kathy
I have thought about writing to you for a couple of days. I nearly did, then I didn’t. Can you take a bit of criticism? If no, read no further. You are obviously clever and write well, quoting Longfellow. At a quick glance I noticed no mistakes except one. [I once told somebody he’d spelled something wrong and he replied that he was dyslexic. I don’t think he was.] No, the only mistake I noticed was that you spelled “compostela” or “Compostela” as “campostella” or “Campostella” every time. The certificate that you get for completing the last 100 km is a compostela and the name of the town is Santiago de Compostela. I find it hard to believe that you haven’t noticed this in all the books and blogs you must have read. I don’t suppose that you can do a “Find and replace” for your whole blog. It just spoils it for me to see this error.
    Buen Camino

P.S. I would have sent you a private message, but I didn’t find your email address. I’d be happy if you deleted this comment, if you’d rather others didn’t read it.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me soon, wifi is not often available on this trip. I’m so glad to have you with me on this trip.Kathy

  4. I think our paths must be crossing in Paris! We’re both going to exactly the same places on the same days. Small world. Have fun.
